148 trees uprooted within a month amid continuous rain in Thane

As incessant rains grip Thane city, incidents of tree falls have surged, with 148 trees uprooted during the month of June alone. Additionally, approximately 100 trees were damaged, causing vehicular disruptions at several locations. Alarmed by these incidents, the residents have raised concerns about the efficacy of tree pruning by the Tree Authority Department.

The Thane Municipal Disaster Management Department reported that despite continuous rainfall throughout Friday, only 15 mm of rain was recorded. However, tree falls continue unabated even in calm weather conditions, highlighting vulnerabilities within Thane Municipal Corporation limits.

Heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds are particularly affecting older trees, exacerbated by the concrete environment that traps around 90 percent of Thane's trees. Despite initiatives like the 2017 committee appointment to address concretization issues around trees, environmentalists remain alarmed by ongoing incidents of tree falls.

In recent years, Thane has experienced significant incidents of tree and branch breakage during the rainy season. The month of May saw 155 instances of tree and branch damage.
