Jaskhar, the wealthiest Gram Panchayat in Uran taluka, is facing a health crisis as 21 cases of chikungunya have been reported in the village. Despite receiving crores of rupees annually in property tax from the JNPT Port and other industrial projects, the local administration is under fire for failing to provide essential civic amenities, including proper sanitation. This negligence has led to unsanitary conditions and a surge in mosquito-borne diseases, leaving residents on edge.
Chikungunya, a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes, is known for causing severe joint pain, high fever, and exhaustion. Though it is not contagious, the symptoms can persist for one to two years, making it a source of widespread fear.
The villagers are understandably anxious, as the outbreak comes during the height of the assembly election campaign season, further heightening tensions.
Despite the financial resources at the disposal of Jaskhar Gram Panchayat, the village is grappling with poor cleanliness standards, leading to a rapid increase in mosquito activity. Health authorities have been working tirelessly to contain the outbreak, with 21 residents currently undergoing treatment in both private and government hospitals.
Dr. Rajendra Itkare, a senior health official from the Taluka Health Department, confirmed the outbreak, he said, “We have identified 21 cases of chikungunya in Jaskhar, and treatment is underway. Our team of doctors, nurses, and health officials is in constant contact with the community to monitor the situation and provide necessary support.”
The health department has emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness to prevent further spread of the disease. Residents are being urged to take responsibility for their surroundings, with officials advising them to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear.
“It is essential for the community to cooperate in keeping the area clean and to report any signs of illness to medical authorities promptly,” added Dr. Itkare.
