In a major step towards enhancing public transport in Maharashtra, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that 2640 new buses will be inducted into the State Transport (ST) Corporation this year. These buses will be seen operating across roads statewide, improving connectivity and comfort for commuters.
Minister Sarnaik made this announcement during the inauguration of the National Road Safety Mission and revealed that the ST modernization project would be implemented in phases. The project is part of a comprehensive master plan aimed at transforming the state's transport services by focusing on cleanliness, safety, and modern facilities.
"We are committed to changing the transport landscape in Maharashtra," Minister Sarnaik stated. "The first step in this transformation is to improve the working conditions for ST employees. From their uniforms to restrooms and facilities, we must ensure the best for them, so that they can provide quality service to passengers."
A highlight of the new additions will be the much-anticipated buses, with 17 buses already inaugurated. By the end of January 2025, 150 buses will be distributed to Thane City and Thane Rural depots. Following that, 300 new ST buses will be introduced monthly across the state.
In another significant announcement, Minister Sarnaik revealed plans to build a modern 100-bed hospital in Borivali for ST employees and their families. This facility will integrate with the state government's health department, ensuring that ST employees receive the best medical care.
