In a remarkable display of efficiency and commitment to cleanliness, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) collected 82 tonnes in a four-day clean-up drive following the Coldplay concerts held at D.Y. Patil Stadium, Nerul, on January 18th, 19th, and 21st.

The NMMC, under the leadership of Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, adopted a “Zero Waste Event” strategy, ensuring the large-scale international event left no lasting environmental impact on the city.

Over four days, the waste collected included 34 tonnes of wet waste and 48 tonnes of dry waste.

Additionally, 20 tonnes of waste collected by the stadium’s sanitation staff were transported to NMMC’s scientific waste management facility for further processing. Special garbage transport vehicles were deployed for seamless operations.

Speaking to Newsband, an official from the Solid Waste Management Department said, “Anticipating a massive turnout of concertgoers from across the globe, we devised a comprehensive waste management plan. Over 150 volunteers were stationed at the venue from 2:00 p.m. daily to ensure effective waste segregation during the concerts”.

Once the events concluded at 10:00 p.m., an intensive clean-up drive was undertaken by a team of more than 100 sanitation workers, supervised by Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar and Deputy Commissioner Dr. Ajay Gadade. The operation, which ran from 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., also involved officers from the Nerul, Belapur, Vashi, and Turbhe divisions.

By early morning each day, the stadium premises and surrounding areas were spotless, earning widespread praise from citizens and concert attendees. The clean-up drive drew national and international attention, with media outlets commending Navi Mumbai’s swift and sustainable approach to managing waste.

The Coldplay concert, declared a “Zero Waste Event,” exemplified Navi Mumbai’s commitment to maintaining its legacy as one of India’s cleanest cities. Under Commissioner Shinde’s leadership, the NMMC showcased an effective blueprint for managing waste during large-scale events, setting an example for other cities.

The day-wise breakdown of waste collection is as follows:
