Highlight Bengal’s eternal handicrafts

Airoli Bengali Association is marking its 32nd year of Durga Puja celebrations from 7th to 13th October at Maa Durga Temple, Maa Durga Mandir Marg, Airoli. The event was inaugurated on Tuesday, 8th October, by Swami Satyadevananda Ji Maharaj of the Khar Ramakrishna Mission.

This year’s highlight is the intricately decorated 'Puja Pandal,' designed by the association’s women’s wing. The theme showcases rural Bengal, featuring traditional handicrafts crafted using village accessories such as ‘Kulo’ (sieve), ‘Jhuri’ (basket), and ‘Hath Pankha’ (hand fans), all made from bamboo and cane sticks. The women used 150 kgs of hay to create these pieces and hand-painted unique designs depicting Durga Maa and her ornaments, bringing the rich heritage of Bengal to life.

The Durga idol, standing 18 feet tall, is adorned in the traditional ‘Daker Saaj’ style, capturing the essence of Bengal’s classical art forms.

Upcoming events include the felicitation of Dr. Suvarnalata Rao, Head of Programming (Indian Music) at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, on 9th October. On 10th October, renowned singer Paromita Halder will perform, followed by a performance by playback singer Jolly Mukherjee on 11th October. On 12th October, 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' and 'Indian Idol' talents Manisha Karmakar and Sayamh Paul will take the stage. Additionally, local participants will showcase their talents through a variety of performances, including ‘Dhunuchi Naach’ and ‘Agomoni Gaan’.

Despite the grandeur of the celebration, the association continues its social service initiatives. It will distribute free meals to 250 underprivileged children and cancer patients, provide a platform for the Adivasi KrantiJyoti Mahila Sangathan from Karjat to perform, and host a free eye check-up camp.
