As temperature rises, PMC issues advisory

With temperatures rising steadily, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a comprehensive health advisory urging residents to take vital precautions. PMC Commissioner Mangesh Chitale has appealed to citizens to safeguard their health by avoiding unnecessary outings during peak heat hours and ensuring they remain well hydrated.

Dr. Anand Gosavi, Chief Medical Officer of Panvel Municipal Corporation, warned that the intensifying heat is causing a rapid decline in body water levels, emphasising that individuals should drink at least 12 to 15 glasses of water daily.

Instead of consuming cold drinks, residents are advised to opt for home-prepared beverages such as buttermilk, lemonade, sugarcane juice, and mint sherbet. Dr. Gosavi also recommended increasing the intake of water-rich, juicy fruits such as watermelon juice to help replenish lost fluids.

Authorities have specifically advised against venturing outdoors between 12 noon and 3 pm, when the heat is most severe.

“Engaging in strenuous outdoor activities or even a simple walk during these hours can lead to dizziness or even sunstroke," Dr. Gosavi stated. Residents are also cautioned against leaving the house on an empty stomach, as this further heightens the risk of heat-induced illnesses.

The advisory outlines a clear dietary framework. Citizens are urged to avoid junk food, which is high in fats and difficult to digest, along with heavy meats, excessive spices, and limiting cold drinks, tea, and coffee.

On the contrary, natural remedies such as adding lemon juice or neem leaves to bath water are recommended to help protect against skin ailments. Incorporating fresh salads and condiments like mint, curry leaf, and mango chutneys into daily meals, as well as consuming vegetables such as onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, and leafy greens, are also suggested.

In terms of clothing and protective measures, residents should wear loose, light-coloured cotton garments to minimise sweat and heat absorption. The use of sunscreen, high-quality goggles, and a hat is also advised to shield the skin and eyes from harmful UV rays.

The municipal advisory comes at a time when the summer heat is expected to intensify further, prompting the authorities to call for heightened vigilance. With clear guidelines in place, PMC hopes to prevent heat-related illnesses and ensure that the community remains healthy and well-informed throughout the season.
