Bala Govind Unveils The Ultimate - A Comprehensive Athletes Coaching Manual

Legendary athletics coach Bala Govind, with over four decades of experience in producing numerous international athletes who have represented India at the highest level unveiled his much-anticipated book, ‘The Ultimate’ - a detailed coaching manual for athletes, at a special event attended by sports enthusiasts, athletes, and renowned personalities from the athletics fraternity ion Wednesday in Mumbai.
The book, aimes guiding coaches and athletes toward a structured and informed approach to sports training, draws on Bala Govind’s huge experience in athletics. Reflecting on the earlier days of limited infrastructure, lack of technical know-how, and evolving understanding of fitness and injury management, the octogenarian shared his vision for empowering the next generation of athletes through this manual.
“This book is not just about coaching; it is about creating a holistic framework for athletic success. When I started, we didn’t know how many things worked, and injuries and fitness were seen as hurdles we had to navigate without proper guidance. I want this book to change that for future athletes and coaches,” said a beaming Bala Govind during the launch event.
Former Olympic distance runner and 1972 Munich Olympian Eddie Sequeira, commended Bala Govind’s efforts and emphasized the importance of learning from the past.
“I’m happy to see this event happen. It will serve as an awakening for many. Back then, we had chances but often made the wrong decisions, even after being advised otherwise. This manual will ensure that such lessons are not forgotten,” said Arjuna Award winner Sequeira, who started his professional career as an mechanical fitter apprentice in Central Railway and soon set various records at State and National championships in the half mile (800m), and metric mile (1500m) within couple of years of pursuing running seriously and also at the All-India Railway meets, before becoming India and Asia's best in the metric mile (1500m) and 5000m track events.
The event also featured a discussion on the evolving landscape of athletics in India and the need for better resources and mentorship for young athletes.
Bala Govind’s book, which is a summation of his sixty plus years of experience, promises to be an essential resource, addressing critical topics like injury prevention, fitness strategies, and structured training methodologies. It is expected to become a cornerstone in the field of sports coaching and a step forward in elevating India’s presence in global athletics.
