Bar owners in Dombivli protest against government’s crackdown

The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) carried out raids on seven to eight bars on Friday, 28th June, 2024 following orders from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde after a similar incident in Pune targeting illegal bar pubs and dhabas.

The actions have sparked strong reactions from bar owners and drivers who argue that they contribute significantly to the economy through taxes and provide livelihoods to hundreds of individuals in the hospitality sector.

Jayant Shetty, owner of Rukmini Bar, expressed frustration, questioning why bars are being targeted despite regular tax payments and the recent renewal of licenses. "We have supported the government through our votes. Why are we being singled out for action?" he angrily demanded. Shetty urged the government to provide alternative solutions before taking such stringent measures.

The crackdown has raised concerns among bar owners and employees about their future livelihoods and the impact of such actions on their families. The KDMC's move continues to stir debate over the balance between enforcing regulations and supporting local businesses in the hospitality sector.
