The growing number of illegal scrap warehouses in Bhiwandi has raised concerns about the safety of local residents. These godowns, often operating without proper certifications, are frequently the sites of fire incidents, posing significant risks to both property and lives in surrounding areas. In response to this ongoing issue, the administration of Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC) has announced plans to take immediate action to curb these hazardous operations.
The illegal scrap warehouses, spread across areas such as Anjurphata, Rahnal, Purna, Kasheli, Dhamanakarnaka, Roshanbagh, Kalyan Road, Nadinaka, Srirangnagar, and Asabi, among others, are known for storing various types of goods, including explosive chemical drums. The lack of safety measures and proper licensing has made these godowns prone to fires, some of which have led to casualties in the past. Additionally, there are concerns about scrap dealers buying and selling stolen goods, further compounding the problem.
Two days ago, a major fire broke out in the Fatima Nagar area, which was traced back to an illegal scrap warehouse. This has intensified calls from local communities and neighbouring areas for immediate action to prevent such incidents from recurring. Despite the frequent fire incidents, many of these warehouses continue to operate without any oversight, with no records of their businesses in government offices or the police department.
Ajay Vaidya, the Commissioner of Bhiwandi Municipal, added that a comprehensive survey of all illegal scrap godowns within the municipal area would soon be conducted, and appropriate action would be taken against them.
Mohan Dahikar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, emphasized that all illegal godown owners would be thoroughly investigated, and legal action would be taken to prevent future fires. He assured that steps would be taken to ensure the safety of the community.
