In the wake of the growing concerns over loss of green cover, rising temperature and pollution, Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation’s (BNCMC) Parks Department has begun creating a network of Miyawaki urban forests in and around the city’s populated areas, with the goal of naturally generating oxygen and enhancing the environment.

The project has taken root in various locations, starting with an 11,000 sq. m. plot at the Chir Shanti Hindu Crematorium in Ajay Nagar, located within Ward Committee No. 5. In a collaborative effort between BNCMC and Keshav Srishti of Bhayander, a total of 3,500 saplings of local species, including betel nut, Murraya paniculata, hibiscus, Nerium oleander have been planted. The project also includes 56 species of botanical trees.

This initiative, which focuses on creating a dense forest ecosystem, not only contributes to generating oxygen but also works to reduce air pollution in the region. By partnering with social organizations, the Municipal Corporation has been able to reduce the overall cost of the project, ensuring a sustainable approach to environmental conservation.

Further expanding the project, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Udyan under Ward Committee No. 3 has seen 8,000 saplings planted across 2,300 sq. m. of land. The saplings include 55 species, such as betel nut, Murraya paniculata, hibiscus, Nerium Oleander and were also planted using the Miyawaki method.

“Additional Miyawaki forest projects are also underway in other parts of Bhiwandi, including the Fene (West) Garden and the MHADA Colony, which will help further enrich the urban landscape. There are also plans for tree plantations near the health centre and in Bhadwad Adivasipada”, said Tree Officer, Nilesh Sankhe.

He further shared plans to expand the project to the park adjacent to the Tadali Cemetery.
