During the Christmas holidays, the serene beauty of the Konkan coast and the world-renowned Elephanta Caves on Gharapuri Island usually attracts thousands of tourists from across India and abroad. This year, however, a tragic boat accident has dampened the festive spirit and raised concerns among tourists, local boat operators, and business owners.
On December 18, the Nilkamal, a passenger boat carrying tourists from Mumbai to Gharapuri Island, was struck by a naval vessel, leading to the loss of several lives.
The devastating incident has had a ripple effect on water tourism, with many tourists now reconsidering their visits to the popular destinations of Alibaug, Mandwa Port, and Gharapuri Island. The collision has left local boat operators and businesses, who rely on the influx of tourists, deeply worried.
Gharapuri Island, also known as Elephanta Island, has long been a beacon for tourists eager to explore its UNESCO-listed caves and enjoy the natural beauty of the region. Located just off the coast of Mumbai, the island has built a strong reputation both in India and abroad, attracting thousands of visitors daily. This influx supports the livelihoods of local businesses and boat drivers, who have benefited from the steady flow of tourists.
Despite the accident, some tourists have chosen to continue their visit to the island, undeterred by the tragic news. Samir Patil, a tourist from Thane, said, “We saw the news of the accident, but we decided not to let it stop us. We are here with our family to enjoy the Christmas holidays and explore the Elephanta Caves. While we feel for the victims, we also believe it’s crucial that both the authorities and boat operators take the necessary precautions to prevent such incidents in the future. The island’s beauty and the experience of visiting the caves are unmatched, and we are determined to enjoy them safely.”
The recent accident has led to a noticeable drop in tourist numbers, with fewer visitors heading to the island this holiday season. While the local economy has taken a hit, there is optimism that the new year will see the return of tourists. Local officials are confident that, with enhanced safety measures and increased awareness, visitors will continue to flock to the island for its unique cultural and natural offerings.
Baliram Thakur, Deputy Sarpanch of Gharapuri Village, stated, “Although the recent boat accident has impacted tourism, we are hopeful that the coming year will bring back the crowds. The village Panchayat and the residents are committed to ensuring the safety of tourists, and we are taking steps to prevent any future incidents.”
