CCI-GMBA Yonex Sunrise District Badminton Championship Gets Underway

The CCI-GMBA Yonex Sunrise District Badminton Championship 2024, touted as one of the most prestigious competitions on the city’s badminton calendar that serves as benchmark for the selection for the Greater Mumbai District team, got underway at the CCI badminton courts from Monday, June 24, 2024.

Being organized by the Cricket Club of India (CCI) in association with the Greater Mumbai Badminton Association (GMBA), the same is being held in 22 categories. This includes Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles for Men’s and Women’s, Boys’ & Girls’ U19 and U-17 Singles and Doubles. The Boys’ & Girls’ U-11, U-13 and U-15 will compete in Singles event only, while Women's Seniors 75+ and Mens' Masters 80+ combination will slug it out in Doubles & Mixed 80+ combination doubles events. The tourney as such has attracted 283 entries this time  around.

On the inaugural day Aarush Jalan played with solid determination and overcame a first game loss, before winning the next two 7-15, 15-14, 15-13 in a Boys’ U-17 singles first round match. In another closely contested encounter. Ananya Katdare on the other hand too managed to overcome Saanchi Santi by snatching a hardfought 15-10, 12-15, 15-11 victory in a Girls’ U-17 singles first round match.

Meanwhile, local favourite Kanishq Gurram, who trains at the CCI cricket Club of India, started hesitantly but managed to find his touch and went on to defeat Rohit Sundaram 15-9, 15-10 in a Men’s singles first round match.

Rohit Athalye also encountered quite a challenge from Neville Katila but stayed in control to register a 15-11, 15-12 win to join Gurram in the second round.
