In a significant step toward improving infrastructure and resolving longstanding issues, the Central Government has approved Rs.16.84 crore under the RDSS (Revamp Distribution Sector Scheme) for laying underground power lines in Ulhasnagar. The initiative aims to eliminate the hazards and traffic obstructions caused by overhead electric cables and poles.

The approval comes after sustained efforts by local MLA Kumar Ailani, who had actively pursued the matter with the Central Government.

On Wednesday, MLA Kumar Ailani held a meeting with Mahavitaran officials to discuss the project. Key topics included obtaining permissions from the Municipal Corporation, finalizing technical methodologies, and planning the execution to minimize disruption for residents.

While the project has been welcomed as a much-needed development, concerns have been raised by residents about the potential disruption it might cause. Many pointed out that roads have already been excavated for underground sewer work, and resuming excavation for power lines may worsen traffic and air pollution in the city.

MLA Ailani has also requested an additional Rs.130 crore from the state government for further electrification projects in Ulhasnagar.

The project is expected to not only enhance safety and improve traffic conditions but also modernize the city's electrical infrastructure, making it more resilient and efficient. Authorities are working to ensure minimal inconvenience to residents during the execution phase.

A total of 17 locations across the city will see the implementation of underground power lines. Areas identified for the work include:

• Gol Maidan to Jai Bhavani Tower
• Follower Chowk to Central Hospital
• Samman DTC to Shiv Sena DTC
• Kriti Care Hospital to Central Hospital
• Section 17 to Lulla Insurance
• Praveen Hotel to Rajiv Gandhi Chowk
• Sukhdev Complex to Kheti Area
• Shahad Pool to Gulshan Nagar
• Other prominent areas like Hiraghat, Powai Chowk, and Shastri Nagar
