The Patrakar Bhavan, constructed by City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) in Sector 38, Nerul, Navi Mumbai, has been lying unused for the last four years, and the building is rapidly falling into disrepair. Originally designed as a hub for city journalists, the building at Plot No. 15 A, covering an area of approximately 980 sq.m, is supposed to serve as a facility with modern amenities including a meeting room, recreation room, multi-purpose hall, guest room, library, and exhibition centre.
However, despite its promising design and potential, the building has been locked and unused for years, leading to growing concerns among Navi Mumbai journalists. Many have called for the building to be handed over to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) for proper utilization.
The neglect is becoming increasingly evident. Overgrown trees and bushes are now rampant on the building’s premises, and the covers of sewerage chamber openings have been stolen. The outer protective wall is in poor condition, and the iron-gate is now rusted, showing clear signs of neglect. Inside, the glass of the inner door too has shattered, leaving the building exposed to vandalism and potential misuse. There is growing concern that individuals with anti-social tendencies could be using the building as a shelter for illicit activities.
The surrounding area, with its commercial and residential buildings, has raised alarms among citizens, who now fear the building’s presence due to its deteriorating condition. “The building, which was meant to serve the journalistic community, has instead become an eyesore and a potential security threat. The funds invested in the project are being wasted, while their safety is compromised”, said Sameer Bagwan, Deputy City Chief (UBT).
He further stated, “It is high time that the Journalist Bhawan be made accessible and functional, benefiting the journalist community as originally intended. The building should no longer be left to rot”.
