Community-led tree care drive in Kharghar gains momentum

In an inspiring demonstration of environmental responsibility, local citizen groups have launched a new initiative, Plant Grow Save and Adopt a Tree, aimed not only at planting new trees but also nurturing and protecting existing ones.

The focus is on safeguarding trees from pest and termite infestations, ensuring their long-term health and survival.

Groups such as Way2 ISR Foundation, the Rotary Club of Navi Mumbai Hillside (RCNM Hillside), and the green warriors of Hyde Park Housing Complex have united to paint the tree trunks and provide other essential care to protect the trees from pests, ensuring their continued thriving.

The initiative, led by Dr Priyeta Priyadarshini, president of RCNM Hillside, officially kicked off on March 23. She expressed her support for the cause by providing the necessary painting materials and sponsoring labourers for the project. She emphasised the importance of protecting these trees before the monsoon season, as it is during the rains that trees are most vulnerable to pest infestations and potential uprooting.

Since 2017, around 5000 trees have been planted along the service road near Sector 35, Kharghar.

The volunteers have already begun painting the tree trunks, and the team plans to complete this task across all trees along the highway before the monsoon. In addition to the painting work, vibrant mural paintings are being created around the plantation areas, helping raise awareness about green consciousness in the community.

“This collaborative effort showcases how communities can unite for a greener, healthier future, protecting our environment and promoting sustainability,” Dharmendra Kar, the founder of Way2 ISR Foundation said.

The initiative is expected to run for the next two months.
