Amid rising prices for older onions, alarming reports have emerged regarding the use of chemical powders to prolong the shelf life of onions stored in warehouses. Traders in the APMC fruit market in Vashi have raised concerns that, similar to the practices seen during mango season, certain chemical agents are being applied to onions to prevent spoilage.
According to allegations from local traders, chemicals such as BSC powder, sulphur powder, and polygar powder are being increasingly used in storage facilities located in regions like Ahmad Nagar, Parner, Nighoz, and Jamkhed. These substances are said to be applied to onions purchased at lower prices, allowing them to be stored for longer periods and subsequently sold at higher prices as demand surges.
Experts warn that the consumption of onions treated with these chemical powders could lead to serious health issues, including respiratory problems, digestive disorders like diarrhoea, skin irritations, and potentially even cancer.
Manohar Totlani, onion and potato trader, has called for immediate action to investigate and penalize storage facilities found using these harmful chemicals. He emphasized the need for stricter regulations to ensure that consumers can enjoy organic and safe food products without the risk of chemical contamination.
