Frustrated by long-standing civic problems in the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) area, Congress party members staged a sit-in near the civic office on Tuesday, demanding immediate action from the administration. The protest was led by Panvel City District Congress Committee President Sudam Patil and was attended by Maharashtra State Congress Vice President Cdr S H Kalawat and other party office bearers and activists.

The protestors accused the PMC administration of negligence in addressing critical issues affecting residents. One of the major concerns highlighted was the inadequate water supply to key areas such as Kharghar, Kalamboli, Kamothe, Taloja, Khanda Colony, and New Panvel. Protesters questioned the failure of the civic administration in releasing adequate quantum of water and demanded corrective measures.

The Congress leaders also criticized the poor condition of roads and drainage systems within the municipal limits. They called for an impartial inquiry into the substandard work being carried out and insisted on action against contractors responsible for the subpar civic infrastructure.

Another pressing issue raised was the enhanced property tax, which has remained a contentious topic for several years now. Despite repeated protests, residents have found no satisfactory resolution. The members demanded a joint meeting with the Chief Minister and the Urban Development Minister to discuss and permanently resolve the tax issue.

Concerns over employment were also raised. The party members expressed dissatisfaction over local residents being overlooked in job recruitments. They insisted that Panvel residents should be given priority in hiring processes to ensure better employment opportunities for the local population.

Additionally, the Congress party voiced its concerns over the municipal budget, criticizing the inadequate provisions for women’s welfare, education, and healthcare. They demanded that more funds be allocated to these crucial sectors. Furthermore, they called for the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Gharkul Awas Yojana in a manner similar to the Slum Rehabilitation Authority scheme, ensuring affordable housing solutions for the underprivileged.

The protest also addressed the need for employment opportunities for disabled individuals in the Panvel Municipal Corporation area, emphasizing the importance of inclusive policies in municipal hiring.

Congress leaders warned that if these issues are not resolved, they would step up their protests. The party has urged the administration to take immediate steps to address the grievances of the people and improve the living conditions in Panvel.
