Congress criticizes CIDCO for failed jetty projects

The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress has criticized the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) for its alleged mismanagement of the jetty projects at CBD Belapur and Nerul, claiming that both initiatives have failed due to poor planning. Congress spokesperson Syed Nashir Hussain expressed concerns over the necessity of the proposed coastal road between CBD Belapur and Kharghar, emphasizing that while they support development, they oppose the extensive tree felling required for the project.

Hussain pointed out significant technical errors in the construction of the Nerul to Kharghar Coastal Road and Jetty. He stated, "CIDCO has invested crores of rupees in constructing jetties at CBD Belapur and Nerul, yet passenger water transport has not commenced due to planning mistakes. While the MTHL Atal Setu is under construction, questions arise about the need for jetties at these locations, especially when a minimum sea depth of 6 feet is necessary. The Nerul jetties are only 3 feet deep."

Hussain further highlighted the potential impact of the coastal road on local residents, particularly in Sector-15, CBD Belapur, where significant tree planting and beautification efforts have been undertaken by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). "If CIDCO does not reconsider its decision regarding the Coastal Road, the Congress Party will take to the streets in protest," he warned.

The spokesperson also noted that the construction of the coastal road would lead to the cutting of approximately 30,000 trees, contradicting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for tree planting in his Mann Ki Baat programme. "We support development, but we are against the rampant felling of trees in its name," Hussain added.
