CR GM unveils logo and launches Jingle
Mumbai: Central Railway is all set to start celebrations to mark 100 years of Electrification. Dharam Veer Meena, General Manager, Central Railway unveiled the logo of 100 years of Electrification and launched a Jingle to initiate the Centenary celebration of Electrification of Central Railway.
Prateek Goswami, Additional General Manager, Rajnish Goyal, Principal Chief Electrical Engineer and Hiresh Mina, Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai Division were also present on the occasion.
The journey of electric traction in India began on February 3, 1925, when the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) now Central Railway ran the first electric train (EMU) between Bombay VT (now CSMT) and Kurla Harbour, a distance of 16 kms. The journey of the 4 Coach EMU, operating on a 1500V DC system marked the beginning of a significant era for the Indian Railways, transitioning from steam-powered locomotives to electric traction.
By 1928 the GIPR was running 4 Coach EMU on the Harbour line and 8 Coach EMU on the Main line. Sir Leslie Wilson, first generation Electric Locomotives were introduced in India in 1928. This was a C-C design 1500V DC locomotive.
Currently the electrification of the railway network is a central part of India’s sustainability agenda, contributing to reduced dependence on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions. The transition to green and efficient energy systems, including the use of renewable sources like solar and wind energy, will drive the future of electric locomotives.
