Indians have gone global and so has the country’s music and culture. From Punjabi MC to AR Rehman’s Bollywood numbers have bested in the charts across the world. It is gaining wider popularity and greater acceptance.

Case in point the Indian Scottish brass band that recently played ‘Dhoom Machale’ at the Commonwealth Day service. The event had the British royalty in attendance including King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and the Prince and Princess of Wales. This performance took place on March 10, 2025, at Westminster Abbey in London during the annual Commonwealth Day ceremony.

The video of the event went viral. King Charles III, the epitome of British aristocracy, was cool about it and even took it in his stride. From the video, it appears the British aristocracy enjoyed the instrumental version of the Bollywood number by the Shree Muktajeevan Swamibapa Pipe Band.

The band, a Hindu Scottish pipe band based in North-West London at Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kingsbury, is known for fusion of traditional Scottish bagpipes with Indian music. Pipe bands typically feature bagpipes and drums, while brass bands include instruments like trumpets, trombones, tubas, and percussion.

The Shree Muktajeevan Swamibapa Pipe Band exemplifies this cross-cultural musical legacy. The ensemble has performed at major international events, including 9/11 memorials. Their Westminster Abbey performance highlighted not only India’s enduring musical influence but also the monarchy’s evolving embrace of multiculturalism.

The band later took to their Instagram handle to comment about the incident. “Shree Muktajeevan Swamibapa Pipe Band London were honoured to perform at the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey in the esteemed presence of Their Majesties King Charles and Queen Camilla. A truly unforgettable moment celebrating unity, heritage, and culture, and follows a long list of performances by the band in front of royalty.”
