A 50-year-old doctor from Dombivli fell victim to an investment scam, losing Rs3.47 crore to fraudsters who lured her with promises of short-term profits ranging from 10% to 50% in the stock market.
According to police, the doctor, who runs her own nursing home, was added to a WhatsApp group in November 2024. The group, consisting of 39 members, shared stock market tips and investment advice.
An alleged investment "expert" in the group assured high returns and later convinced the complainant to download a trading app.
Initially, the doctor invested small amounts and saw apparent profits reflected in the app. Believing it to be a legitimate platform, she continued investing as per the scammers' instructions, ultimately transferring Rs3.47 crore in multiple transactions.
However, when she attempted to withdraw her profits, the fraudsters stalled, giving vague responses and demanding additional payments under the pretense of taxes and charges.
Realising she had been duped, the doctor filed a complaint on the cybercrime portal.
Following her report, Thane police registered a case and launched an investigation.
