The air quality in the Taloja belt, including the Taloja Industrial area, has drastically deteriorated, according to the Hourly Air Pollution report released by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) on January 3, 2025. Residents under the jurisdiction of the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the apathy shown by local authorities in addressing the alarming levels of air pollution.
Thick smog blankets the region, particularly during the evening hours, extending to parts of Kharghar. This poor air quality has led to an increase in health issues, especially among senior citizens, children, and individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma.
The MPCB report highlights that the Air Quality Index (AQI) for the area reached 151, with PM2.5 identified as the primary pollutant. Elevated levels of other pollutants, including PM10 and carbon monoxide, were recorded in significant quantities, especially between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.
Shiv Sena Panvel Mahanagar organiser Mangesh Ranawade pointed out that while the MPCB attributes pollution to vehicular emissions, the data clearly indicates that industrial activities are the primary cause during nighttime hours when traffic is minimal.
“Despite repeated complaints and submissions, including a detailed report presented to PMC Commissioner Mangesh Chitale last week, no substantial action has been taken to curb industrial pollution,” Ranawade stated. He urged the PMC to address the issue urgently, emphasizing the health hazards faced by thousands of residents in Taloja and nearby areas.
