Over 960 arrested in 2024

In a significant effort to combat drug trafficking and promote a drug-free environment, the Navi Mumbai Police have launched a special campaign titled 'Drug-Free Navi Mumbai.' This initiative has led to the crackdown on drug trafficking rackets in the city, with the Navi Mumbai Anti-Narcotics Cell and local police station conducting 668 operations in 2024, resulting in the seizure of drugs worth Rs. 33.68 crore and the arrest of 962 individuals involved in drug trafficking and consumption.

Under the leadership of Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe, who took charge two years ago, the Navi Mumbai Police recognized the alarming rise in drug-related issues, particularly among students and youth. In response, Commissioner Bharambe initiated the 'Drug-Free Navi Mumbai' campaign, focusing on curbing drug trafficking and addiction in the community.

The campaign, guided by Additional Commissioner of Crime Branch Deepak Sakore and Deputy Commissioner of Police Amit Kale, has involved extensive surveillance and raids at schools, colleges, malls, railway stations, bus stands, and parks throughout the city. These efforts have resulted in the arrest of 668 persons including 56 foreign nationals, primarily from African countries, who were found to be involved in drug trafficking. Drugs worth Rs 25.70 crore were seized from these individuals.

Recognizing the presence of illegal foreign nationals in areas such as Ulwe, Kharghar, and Koparkhairane, the Navi Mumbai Police have intensified their actions against these individuals. Over the past year, 653 foreign nationals have been arrested and deported to their countries of origin. To prevent their return, the police have begun recording their biometrics and sharing this information with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Mumbai.

The ‘Drug-Free Navi Mumbai’ campaign aligns with the broader initiative of ‘Drug-Free Maharashtra’ led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Prominent film actor John Abraham is the brand ambassador for this campaign. To reach out to maximum citizens, especially youth, the police have been utilizing social media platforms like X, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram to raise awareness about the dangers of drug addiction and promote a drug-free lifestyle.

“Through this campaign, the Navi Mumbai Police aim to educate the community about the risks of drug use, focusing on making schools and college campuses drug-free environments. Additionally, efforts are being made to counsel and rehabilitate youth struggling with addiction, helping them reintegrate into society”, informed Senior Police Inspector Sandeep Nigde, Navi Mumbai Anti-Narcotics Cell.
