The picturesque D.Y. Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai will play host to India, West Indies IDFC FIRST Bank Women’s T20I Series starting Sunday 15 December, 2024. This is India's first T20 series after the heart breaking T20 World Cup exit in the league stage after losing their tourney opener to eventual champions West Indies and their only consolation was a hard-earned win against Pakistan.
The Women’s Selection Committee last week announced India's 15-member squads for both the upcoming three-match T20I & ODI home series at the back of the Australia series debacle where India were blanked 3-0 by the most successful team and defending ODI World Champions recently.
Veteran cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur will once again lead the 15-member Indian team in both the format of the white ball cricket, with Smriti Mandhana as her trusted lieutenant who scored a century in the final ODI Down Under, her fourth century of the season .
The beleaguered Indian captain who is a true fighter who was woefully short of form throughout the ODI Series against Australia will need to dig deep to be among the runs and inspire confidence among her team mates in order to lead from the front. Harmanpreet on the other hand has who hit two fifties in her last two T20I innings, will be crucial in the middle-order once again. Smriti opening the innings on the other hand has been India's most successful batter with 570 runs in 20 matches. Another top order batter Jemimah Rodrigues too had a forgettable year, having scored only 219 runs in 15 matches.
The fact that India have won each of their last eight T20Is against the West Indies in the shortest format since November 2019 will certainly boost the morale of the young team which will miss the services of Yastika Bhatia, Shreyanka Patil & Priya Punia because of injury and were unavailable for selection. The selectors have in their place called upon the services of Nandini Kashyap, Raghvi Bist and Sajana Sajeevan.
Their rivals West Indies led by all-rounder Hayley Matthews too had an above average outing in the shortest format of the game having won nine out of their 13 T20Is this year. Among those wins were West Indies' famous triumph over former champion England in the T20 World Cup, in which the young Qiana Joseph teamed up with skipper Hayley Matthews to lead the demolition job. The West Indies have called in Deandra Dottin but will be without senior all-rounder Stafanie Taylor, who is injured.
India’s squad : Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Smriti Mandhana (VC), Nandini Kashyap, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh (WK), Uma Chetry (WK), Deepti Sharma, Sajana Sajeevan, Raghvi Bist, Renuka Singh Thakur, Priya Mishra, Titas Sadhu, Saima Thakor, Minnu Mani, Radha Yadav
