NMMC to construct 139 artificial immersion ponds

In a laudable effort to champion eco-friendly festivities during the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has extended an invitation to residents to immerse their Ganesha idols in specially designated artificial immersion ponds. This visionary initiative seeks to combat water pollution and safeguard the environment throughout the annual celebration.

Rajesh Narvekar, the Municipal Commissioner of NMMC, has urged the citizens of Navi Mumbai to actively embrace this eco-friendly approach to Ganesh Chaturthi. The decision by NMMC to offer free immersion facilities has been met with enthusiasm from both Ganesh Utsav Mandals and the local population.

In alignment with the directive from Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Narvekar has declared that there will be no charges for obtaining permits to set up pandals (temporary structures) for the festival. To facilitate this, dedicated counters have been established in each department office for the convenience of Ganesh Utsav Mandals in Navi Mumbai.

Furthermore, as part of an extensive drive to combat water pollution, the NMMC is in the process of constructing 139 artificial immersion ponds at various locations throughout Navi Mumbai. These ponds are equipped with Gabion walls to streamline the immersion process. Narvekar stated, "This year, the NMMC aims to surpass last year's achievement of constructing 140 artificial immersion ponds."

The construction of these artificial ponds is being closely monitored by a committee consisting of environmental experts and engineering departments.
