Encroachments under flyovers tarnish Navi Mumbai’s clean image

top-news

Despite securing third place nationally and first in Maharashtra for cleanliness, Navi Mumbai is grappling with unsanitary conditions under its flyovers due to encroachments by the homeless. While the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has made significant strides in beautifying the city, these encroachments have created an unsightly and unhygienic environment.

Areas like Sanpada have undergone transformation under the leadership of interim Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, with the closed flyover space turned into a sports complex. However, the resurgence of homeless settlements under flyovers is undermining these efforts.

One glaring example is the area outside Koparkhairane station on the Thane-Belapur line, where a group of homeless individuals has set up camp. The space, meant for public use, has become a dumping ground for scrap materials, stoves, clothes, and water containers. This unsightly scene forces citizens to navigate alternative routes to avoid the mess, often crossing roads unsafely.

The area under the flyover has also become a site for daily activities, leaving it dirty and foul-smelling. Despite the proximity of a department office, little action has been taken to address the issue.

Assistant Commissioner Sunil Kothale of Koparkhairane stated, "The Municipal Corporation will take phased action against such encroachments to reduce their number. Similar actions have been taken earlier, and efforts will continue."
