Fish prices soar amid bird flu fear in Navi Mumbai

top-news

With the looming threat of bird flu spreading in nearby Chirner, Raigad district, has sparked concerns among non-vegetarian food lovers. As a result, there has been a significant shift in preference towards fish, driving up its prices.

The fear of bird flu has led to a drop in demand for chicken, mutton, and eggs, while the demand for fish has surged. Non-vegetarian consumers, wary of the flu, are now turning to fish as a safer alternative, significantly impacting the market. While experts advise that chicken and eggs should be thoroughly cooked to prevent contamination, the public remains cautious about consuming poultry products, further boosting the demand for fish.

As a result of the increased demand and lower availability due to cold weather, fish prices have risen sharply. Additionally, the ongoing bird flu scare has contributed to this surge. With prices already high due to reduced supply, non-vegetarians are now facing steeper costs for their seafood cravings.

Here are the current fish prices:

  • Pomfret (large): ₹1000-1500 per kg
  • Kingfish: ₹800-1200 per kg
  • Black Pomfret: ₹600-1000 per kg
  • Small Pomfret: ₹900-1200 per kg
  • Prawns: ₹500-750 per kg
  • Indian salmon: ₹600-1000 per kg
