The much-awaited Foot-Over-Bridge (FOB) at Sector 9, Vashi which has been opened to the public after a prolonged delay, providing much-needed relief to the residents and shoppers in the area. Initially slated for completion in August, the project faced several setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other unforeseen hurdles. Now fully functional with the addition of elevators, the FOB has been welcomed by the community and is already making a positive impact on pedestrian safety.
The bridge, which cost approximately Rs 2.44 crores, aims to ease pedestrian movement across the busy road, especially in the high-traffic marketplace at Sector 9. With a significant footfall in the area, the new infrastructure has been a boon for safety, reducing the risk of road accidents.
Radhika Kavinde, a resident of Sector 9, expressed her satisfaction, saying, “Better late than never, this bridge is a boon to the residents of this area. My children and I can safely get to the other side of the road without worrying about oncoming traffic. We use it quite frequently now”.
Amol Desai, another local resident, appreciated the thoughtful addition of elevators, especially for elderly visitors. “The installation of lifts was a smart move by NMMC. It really helps my aged parents who visit the public garden on the other side every evening. The lift is spacious and easy to use. The tiles are also tactile and non-slippery, which makes it safe,” he said.
Indrajit Das, another resident, highlighted the accessibility benefits for various groups. “The bridge helps pedestrians cross easily and is very convenient for vendors carrying heavy bags. It’s also helpful for schoolchildren and the elderly. We’ve been eagerly awaiting this bridge, and now that it's here, it’s made our daily commutes safer and more convenient.”
