At 49, Pradeep Damodaran stands out as a seasoned writer and journalist with a rich and diverse background. With a postgraduate degree in computer applications and a PG diploma in journalism, he spent a decade working in software engineering before dedicating 15 years to journalism and writing. This unique combination of technical expertise and storytelling has significantly shaped his literary voice.
The Inspiration Behind ‘In Pursuit of Freedom’
‘In Pursuit of Freedom’ is a compelling travelogue that examines the concept of freedom in India, nearly eight decades after the country’s independence. Damodaran explains that the book recounts his journeys to various iconic destinations associated with India’s freedom struggle. It seeks to explore whether the freedoms fought for in these towns and villages remain relevant today. “It serves as a ground report on freedom in India,” he notes, blending his personal experiences with historical context.
A Continuation of Themes
While ‘In Pursuit of Freedom’ shares thematic similarities with Damodaran’s previous book, ‘Borderlands’, it offers a fresh perspective. In ‘Borderlands’, he examined the significance of national boundaries in contemporary society. His first book, an investigative work on the century-old Mullaperiyar dam conflict between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, addressed the complexities surrounding this long-standing issue. ‘In Pursuit of Freedom’ continues his exploration of important societal themes but through the lens of travel and personal reflection.
Overcoming Obstacles
The journey to complete *In Pursuit of Freedom* was not without its challenges, particularly due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Damodaran recalls how the various waves and travel restrictions forced him to constantly adjust his itinerary. “I had to keep planning and replanning,” he shares. However, once travel resumed, everything fell into place. “Fortunately, I was able to complete the journeys without significant health issues,” he adds.
Looking Ahead
As for future projects, Damodaran is currently in the brainstorming phase. “I haven’t finalized anything yet, but I’m exploring some concepts and will soon embark on a new project,” he reveals. Additionally, there are some ongoing works that he plans to revisit and complete.
Advice for Aspiring Writers
Offering advice to young writers, Damodaran emphasizes the importance of perseverance. “There’s nothing new I can say,” he admits. “The oldest, best, and most important advice is to keep writing, rewriting, and writing some more. This profession should not be pursued solely for success or fame—there are easier paths for those. Writing should be a pursuit of passion. As long as one is dedicated to the craft and works consistently, success and satisfaction will naturally follow.”
