Rising summer temperatures have driven up the demand for cucumbers, leading to a sharp price hike. Last month, cucumbers were priced at Rs 10-Rs 20 per kg, but they now cost Rs 50-Rs 80 per kg in the retail market. Farmers are benefiting from the increase, while traders predict prices may reach Rs 80-Rs 120 per kg as the heat intensifies.
With soaring temperatures, people are opting for cooling foods like juices, cold drinks, and water-rich vegetables. Currently, 500-600 quintals of cucumbers are arriving daily at APMC markets from major producing regions like Pune, Nashik, Ahmednagar, and Sangli. Traders report that demand continues to rise.
Experts caution that market cucumbers are often chemically treated and advise soaking them in salt and turmeric water before consumption.
Medical professionals highlight cucumbers' benefits, including hydration, improved digestion, and blood pressure regulation. Dr Prashant Jawade and Dr Pratik Tambe spoke about the importance of cucumbers in a summer diet to maintain health and prevent heat-related issues.
As the summer heat intensifies, cucumbers remain an essential and popular snack choice for cooling relief.
