In a growing concern for the industrial landscape of Navi Mumbai, scrap dealers have begun encroaching on vacant plots owned by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). These plots, spread across prime locations, have now become dumping grounds for piles of plastic bags and other scrap materials, severely affecting the surrounding industrial estate.
The land, originally acquired by MIDC for industrial development, was taken from farmers and allocated for factory use. However, due to underutilization and lack of protection, over 400 acres of this valuable land are now being encroached upon. This illegal occupation is rapidly expanding, particularly in areas such as Digha, Thane, Belapur Road, Khairne, Pawane, Turbhe, and Shirwane.
What is even more alarming is that these scrap warehouses are situated under high-voltage power lines, with some handling flammable materials. This poses a serious fire hazard to the entire region, with the potential for a massive disaster if a fire were to break out.
The illegal activities have created a sense of urgency in the community, with residents and businesses alike demanding action from authorities to remove the scrap warehouses and protect the industrial estate. However, despite the growing concerns, when contacted, Rajaram Rathod, the Executive Engineer of the MIDC Mahape Regional Office, was unavailable for comment.
