Illegal garbage burning in Sector 25, Vashi sparks concerns over air pollution

Residents of Sector 25, Vashi are raising alarms over illegal garbage burning in the area, despite clear regulations prohibiting such practices. A complaint was brought to light by a vigilant resident, who shared images of dense smoke emanating from the vicinity of Akshar Business Park, causing concerns about rising pollution levels and potential health risks.

In his tweet, Kishore Indori directly addressed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the NMMC, urging them to take swift action. “There is daily garbage burning going on in Akshar Business Park, Sector 25, Vashi, despite no garbage burning instructions by NMMC. Please take appropriate action,” he wrote.

The attached images reveal thick plumes of smoke engulfing the area, with buildings and construction sites barely visible through the haze. The burning appears to be taking place in an open lot, with visible signs of trucks and other industrial activity nearby. This blatant disregard for environmental norms comes even as the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) enforces a strict no-garbage-burning policy.

Shlok Bansal, another resident of Sector 25, Vashi said, “The incident highlights a worrying trend of air quality deterioration in Navi Mumbai. Residents living in the vicinity of Sector 25 are voicing concerns about the health impact of toxic fumes resulting from the burning of waste. Exposure to such pollutants is known to aggravate respiratory conditions and contribute to long-term health issues.”

Experts suggest that garbage burning releases hazardous pollutants, including carbon monoxide, particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), and dioxins, which can have severe environmental and health consequences.
