Illegal hoardings mushroom under the garb of Dahi Handi celebration

Navi Mumbai: Despite recent actions by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) against illegal banners, the city once again witnessed a surge in unauthorized advertisements during the Dahi Handi celebrations. On August 7, the NMMC had taken a firm stance, removing 211 illegal banners and issuing a stern warning against further violations. However, this warning appears to have gone unheeded, as numerous illegal banners were spotted across the city during the festive occasion.

Navi Mumbai's skyline is often marred by unauthorized advertisements, ranging from commercial hoardings to birthday plaques of political leaders and activists. This issue was particularly evident during Dahi Handi, as many politicians and social workers organized events across the city, leading to a proliferation of banners and hoardings promoting these events. These banners, which lined the streets from the city’s entrance and beyond, included messages of good luck and support from prominent local figures.

While advertising is a significant source of revenue for the municipal corporation, it often occurs without the necessary permits. The NMMC has designated 126 official locations for advertisements, urging individuals and organizations to pay the proper fees and adhere to the regulations. However, the appeal seems to have had little effect, as unauthorized banners continue to clutter the cityscape.
