The annual season for Indian Jujubes has begun, and the fruit division of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) is already seeing a good influx. Known for their taste, which is very similar to that of an apple, they have become a hot pick for both vendors and customers alike.
The Indian Jujube season starts in January, with 100 to 200 quintals arriving daily. Traders report that Jujubes, resembling green apples, are particularly popular. These fruits, which are small and sour when unripe but turn red upon ripening, have seen a rise in demand due to their unique taste and nutritional benefits. Rich in calcium, phosphorus, and iron, they are considered superior to apples and oranges in terms of nutrition.
In addition to traditional varieties like Chanyamanya and Chameli, the market is now seeing an influx of larger Jujubes grown in regions like Barshi, Pune, Junnar, Sangli, and Ahmednagar. These fruits are in high demand due to their sweeter taste and longer shelf life of 10 to 12 days.
Retail prices for the fruit range from Rs. 40 to Rs. 120, and with further increases expected in the coming weeks, the prices are likely to reduce further.
