The Indian delegation made a stellar impression at the 54th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2024, held in Isfahan, Iran, from July 21 to July 29. All five Indian participants secured medals, with the country achieving a notable feat by winning 2 Gold and 3 Silver medals. Out of 193 students from 43 countries, India ranked fourth in the country-wise medal tally, sharing the spot with Vietnam. The Indian delegation was led by Prof. Deepak Garg from DAV College, Chandigarh, and Dr. Shirish Pathare from HBCSE, TIFR. Prof. A. C. Biyani (Retd., Govt. Nagarjuna Post Graduate College of Science, Raipur) and Prof. Vivek Bhide (Gogate-Jogalekar College, Ratnagiri) served as Scientific Observers. Notably, Dr. Shirish Pathare was invited to join the three-member International Board of IPhO 2024.

Contestants tackled a 5-hour theoretical exam featuring problems on global warming due to the greenhouse effect, trapping of ions using the "Paul trap" and Doppler cooling techniques, and the dynamics and stability of an accreting binary star system. The 5-hour experimental component included tasks on heat conduction through a copper rod and diffraction from phase steps.
