JNPA awards Rs. 284 crore agro processing facility project to a consortium
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has taken a significant step forward in enhancing India's agricultural trade infrastructure by issuing the Letter of Award (LoA) to a consortium comprising M/s Trident Agrocom Exports Private Limited and M/s Man Infraconstruction Limited.
The awarded project, valued at approximately Rs. 284 Crores, is set to establish an export-import cum domestic agriculture commodity-based processing and storage facility within JNPA’s port complex.
The facility will be developed on a 27-acre land parcel and, once operational, is expected to handle about 1.2 million tonnes of cargo annually. This project aims to significantly bolster the country's agro trade by improving the processing, storage, and transportation infrastructure for agricultural commodities.
Notably, this is the first facility of its kind to be provided by JN Port, designed to offer comprehensive services including processing, sorting, packing, and laboratory facilities, thereby ensuring compliance with food safety and trade regulations.
The project received the approval of the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, on 16 July 2024. Commenting on the project's significance, the Chairman of JNPA, Unmesh Sharad Wagh, said, “This project will enhance India’s agricultural logistics capabilities and support the growth of both domestic and international agro trade. With the new facility, JNPA is playing a critical role in strengthening India’s agricultural export infrastructure. In the new year, our focus will be on accelerating growth and development, ensuring fast-paced work for timely completion of key projects.”
Since its inception on 26 May 1989, JNPA has transformed from a bulk cargo terminal into India's premier container port, operating five container terminals: NSFT, NSICT, NSIGT, BMCT, and APMT. Additionally, JNPA hosts a Shallow Water Berth for general cargo and a Liquid Cargo Terminal managed by the BPCL-IOCL consortium. The port's recently constructed coastal berth further enhances coastal container traffic.
Furthermore, JNPA operates a meticulously designed multi-product Special Economic Zone (SEZ) across 277 hectares, offering state-of-the-art infrastructure to boost export-oriented industries in India. The authority is also developing an all-weather, deep-draft, greenfield port at Vadhvan in Maharashtra, poised to be among the top 10 ports globally and 100% green since its inception.
