Innovative Vat Purnima celebrations: Women plant Banyan Trees in Navi Mumbai

In a novel twist to the traditional Vatpurnima celebrations, women in Navi Mumbai marked the occasion by planting banyan trees, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation. This initiative was championed by the Navi Mumbai Sajjan Nagarik Mancha in response to rising temperatures, increasing pollution, and seasonal uncertainties.

Recognizing the banyan tree’s extensive lifespan of over 100 years and its ability to provide oxygen for 20 hours daily, the Sajjan Nagarik Mancha proposed that women plant banyan trees at their own expense. This idea was warmly received by the women of Agroli, who planted 21 banyan trees to celebrate Vat Purnima.

Vat Purnima is a significant festival for married women, who traditionally worship the banyan tree, praying for the long life and well-being of their husbands. This year, the women embraced a modern approach by combining ritual with environmental action. They adorned themselves in new clothes and ornaments and conducted their prayers around newly planted banyan trees, integrating tradition with ecological responsibility.

The banyan tree, revered in Ayurvedic medicine for its numerous health benefits, symbolizes longevity and stability. With deforestation contributing to increased temperatures and pollution, the planting of these trees serves as a proactive measure to combat environmental degradation.

In addition to banyan trees, the initiative included planting Pipal and Kadunimb trees, with plans to plant the remaining banyan trees on Parsik Hill. This eco-friendly celebration of Vat Purnima has garnered praise from both citizens and social media users.

Sushila Mulik, a participant in the event, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "Considering the increasing pollution and rising temperatures, we will plant one tree every year. We encourage other women to celebrate Vat Purnima by planting banyan trees in their communities as well."
