The Karnala Sanctuary in Panvel taluka is undergoing significant changes aimed at attracting more tourists while preserving its natural beauty. As the region transforms, the sanctuary has emerged as a prime destination for nature enthusiasts, offering a unique blend of wildlife and history.
To enhance the visitor experience, the sanctuary has introduced new features, including vibrant statues of tigers, deer, flamingos, and butterflies, designed to engage and delight children. These additions aim to create a more interactive environment for families visiting the sanctuary.
Karnala Sanctuary is renowned for its diverse bird population, drawing bird watchers and nature lovers alike. Nestled along the Mumbai-Goa highway, it provides a serene escape from the bustling city life. In 2024, the sanctuary welcomed over 75,000 tourists, who enjoyed activities such as trekking, bird watching, and soaking in the tranquility of the area. The sanctuary is home to 134 species of domestic and exotic birds, as well as a variety of wildlife, including leopards, wild boars, and wild cats.
Adding to its allure is the historical significance of Karnala Fort, which dates back to 1248. Originally ruled by the Yadavas of Devgiri, the fort has a rich history, having been conquered by the Mughals and later captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1670. This historical backdrop, combined with the sanctuary's natural beauty, makes it a popular destination for tourists from Mumbai and beyond.
In response to the growing number of visitors, the sanctuary has implemented new facilities to enhance the tourist experience. These include an open gym, comfortable benches for relaxation, and various entertainment options for children. Additionally, the sanctuary now offers guided tours for birdwatchers and trekkers, ensuring that visitors can fully appreciate the rich biodiversity and scenic landscapes.
Narayan Rathod, Forest Warden of Karnala Sanctuary, stated, "We are committed to improving the facilities in the Karnala Sanctuary area to accommodate the increasing number of tourists. Our goal is to provide a memorable experience while promoting the conservation of our natural resources”.
