KDMC area now home to over 7 lakh trees

Kalyan: If you visit the Kalyan and Dombivli area and are taken aback by the lush green cover, don’t be surprised. The rapidly developing city is now home to 7,36,005 trees, according to the tree census report for the year 2023-24 conducted by the Parks and Tree Authority Department of the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC).

Taking pride in the green cover, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Indu Rani Jakhar stated that the city of Kalyan Dombivli will henceforth be known as the "City of Trees."

During the presentation at the Standing Committee Hall of the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation, Chief Park Superintendent Sanjay Jadhav highlighted the report's findings, revealing a diverse range of 206 species of trees, including indigenous varieties such as Amla, Behda, Indian laburnum, Gandhraj, banyan tree, Peepal tree. Notably, 77% of the total trees, or 5,66,975, are native species, while 23%, or 1,69,030, are exotic. The report also identified 2,014 heritage trees, with 98% of those aged 50 years or older in good health.

Dr. Indu Rani emphasized the importance of increasing the number of trees in the region, stating that the designation of "City of Trees" aligns with Kalyan Dombivli's commitment to becoming a sustainable and environmentally friendly city. The census, which took 12 months to complete, utilized GIS/GPS technology to provide comprehensive data on the location, species, height, age, and health of the trees.
