KDMC to spend Rs. 4 crores to clean open nullahs under its jurisdiction

The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has announced plans to initiate the cleaning of major open nullahs within its jurisdiction, allocating Rs. 4.29 crores for the project across 10 wards for the fiscal year 2025-2026. Officials have confirmed that the work will commence soon, with the tender process already underway.

A senior KDMC official said that the tender encompasses the cleaning of large drains both before and after the monsoon season, with the primary goal of preventing waterlogging issues.

Unlike previous years, where delays in the tender process resulted in late cleaning work, the early publication of this year’s tender indicates that the cleaning operations will begin sooner than usual.

“The ward-wise tenders outline specific terms, conditions, and special requirements to ensure the drains are maintained throughout the year. Payments to contractors will be disbursed in three instalments at the end of the financial year”, informed the official.

The drain-cleaning contract has generated significant competition among contractors, with bids coming in 18% to 28% lower than anticipated costs.

Generally, delays in cleaning have led to complaints of waterlogging during the initial monsoon showers, a challenge the administration has struggled to address due to inefficiencies and monopolies held by certain agencies.

KDMC Solid Waste Management Deputy Commissioner Atul Patil confirmed that the actual cleaning work is set to begin in the first week of April, following the completion of the tender process.

“To address past concerns, this year’s tender includes strict conditions and timelines, mandating that 80% of the work must be completed by June 15, 90% by October 15, and 100% by March 31”, said Mr. Patil.
