Former corporator of Ward 4 of Panvel Municipal Corporation, Netra Patil, raised serious concerns regarding the rising pollution in Kharghar and surrounding areas. In a statement given to Mangesh Chitale, Commissioner and Administrator of Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC), Netra highlighted how violations by builders are exacerbating pollution levels, leading to health issues among residents, especially senior citizens and asthma patients.
She noted that the residents of Kharghar have been enduring high levels of air and noise pollution due to ongoing construction activities in various sectors of the city. She criticized the builders for flouting regulations set by the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). The residents have reported that pollution is being intensified by factors such as dust particles, toxic chemicals, and other pollutants that are being released into the air during construction.
According to Patil, despite these ongoing issues, no punitive actions have been taken by the PMC against the violators. She emphasized the frustration of the common residents and property tax payers who feel that their complaints are being ignored. "The builders are supposed to install 18-meter-high green nets around their construction sites and take measures like spraying water to control dust. However, these rules are not being followed, and the Municipal Corporation is not taking action," Patil said.
Residents have also raised concerns about the lack of inspection at construction sites. Many have accused PMC officials and ward officers of being out of touch with ground realities, claiming that they spend their time in air-conditioned offices instead of conducting inspections. "How will they understand the extent of pollution if they don’t visit these construction sites?" said a local resident.
In response to these issues, citizens have demanded immediate action against the builders who are violating the rules. Health experts have expressed their concern, citing an increase in respiratory diseases and other health complications due to the heightened pollution levels.
