World Down Syndrome Day is marked each year on March 21, beginning in 2007. The 21st day of March was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
This year, the theme is ‘Improve Our Support Systems.’ The theme is to strengthen inclusive support systems to secure that individuals with Down syndrome receive the care, education, and opportunities they deserve.
Several award-winning movies feature characters with Down syndrome or explore themes related to the condition. Three notable examples include:
The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019): This adventure comedy-drama film stars Zack Gottsagen, an actor with Down syndrome, as a young man who runs away from a residential nursing home to pursue his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. The film received critical acclaim for its performances and heart-warming story.
Colegas (2012): ‘Colegas’ is a Spanish film released in 2012 that tells the story of three young men with Down syndrome who embark on an adventurous road trip together. The film follows Jose, Adolfo, and Samuel, who live in a residential facility but dream of experiencing life beyond its confines.
Colegas is a heartwarming and humorous tale that celebrates the spirit of friendship, self-discovery, and the pursuit of dreams, while also challenging stereotypes and perceptions about individuals with Down syndrome.
The Other Sister (1999): This romantic comedy-drama film follows the story of a young woman with intellectual disabilities, played by Juliette Lewis, who strives for independence and love despite her family's concerns. While the film focuses on a different intellectual disability, it highlights themes of acceptance and empowerment.
Movies featuring characters with Down syndrome have been instrumental in raising awareness and understanding of the condition by providing representation, education, and fostering empathy. By depicting the daily lives and challenges of individuals with Down syndrome, these films dispel myths and stereotypes, promoting accurate awareness and acceptance.
