Dev Diwali, also known as Dev Deepawali or the Diwali of the Gods, is a Hindu festival celebrated in the holy city of Varanasi, India.

The Triumph of the Gods over Tripurasura

Tripurasura became arrogant and began to misuse his power, causing havoc and distress in the three worlds (heavens, earth, and the underworld). The demon constructed three invincible fortresses in space, known as the Tripura, and lived in each of them.

The gods, unable to tolerate the tyranny of Tripurasura, sought the help of Lord Shiva to defeat him. Lord Shiva, recognizing the imbalance caused by Tripurasura's misuse of power, agreed to intervene. With the consent of other deities, Lord Shiva prepared to destroy the three fortresses.

On the day of Kartik Purnima (the full moon day in the Hindu month of Kartika), the gods, led by Lord Shiva, waged a war against Tripurasura. The battle continued for many years, and finally, on the full moon night of Kartika, the gods achieved victory. Lord Shiva, in his form as Tripurantaka (the destroyer of Tripura), destroyed the three fortresses, ending the reign of Tripurasura.

Dev Diwali is celebrated to commemorate the gods' victory over Tripurasura. It is believed that on this day, the gods return to their abodes after the successful battle. The festival is marked by elaborate rituals, the lighting of lamps, and the performance of aarti (ritual worship with light) to honor the triumphant deities.
