In a remarkable initiative led by the Forest Department to commemorate the Jubilee year of Independence, an additional 1,34,490 trees were planted in the Konkan division during the year 2023-24. The plantation drive encompasses the creation of 'Belvan,' 'Amritvan,' 'Panchayatvan,' and 'Miyawaki' forests, covering a sprawling 27.45 hectares of land.

This innovative scheme focuses on the conservation and expansion of green cover, aligning with the broader goals of environmental sustainability. The 'Belvan' gardens, dedicated to the bel tree, was established at religious sites, utilizing the leaves, roots, fruits, and bark for various purposes. Medicinal plants such as bel, sita ashok, rudraksha, bor, palas, parijat, chapa, and kanher were incorporated into these gardens across Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts of the Konkan division.

The significance of the bel tree, particularly in religious contexts, has fuelled a surge in demand for its leaves, contributing to the success of the 'Belvan' initiative. Moreover, the creation of 'Amrit Forest,' 'Panchayat Forest,' and 'Miyawaki Forest' involves planting medicinal herbs, rare plants, and crucial trees. This strategic approach aimed to counteract the adverse effects of pollution, escalating temperatures, and the impacts of industrialization and urbanization on human life.

In Thane and Ratnagiri districts of the Konkan Division, 'Amrit Forest' has been established with the plantation of 1,200 trees across 3.00 hectares. Simultaneously, 'Panchayat Forests' have taken root over 17.50 hectares in Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, featuring a total of 1,750 trees. Notably, 'Miyawaki Forest' has witnessed the planting of an impressive 1,30,500 trees over 4.35 hectares in Raigad district alone.

This concerted effort by the Forest Department underscores a commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable green practices, setting a positive precedent for the region's ecological future. The ambitious afforestation project is anticipated to yield manifold benefits, including enhanced biodiversity, improved air quality, and a resilient ecosystem for generations to come. The Konkan division eagerly awaits the flourishing of these newly planted trees, symbolizing a collective stride towards a greener and healthier environment.
