On Monday, 14th October, the Maharashtra government declared a complete toll waiver for light motor vehicles at all five entry points into Mumbai, effective from midnight. The exemption, which includes small vehicles, school buses, and State Transport (ST) buses, was decided during the State Cabinet meeting. This significant move aims to ease the burden on motorists and commuters entering the city.

The toll plazas where the waiver will be applied are Vashi on the Sion-Panvel Highway, Mulund on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg and Eastern Express Highway, Airoli Bridge on Airoli-Mulund Road, and Dahisar on the Western Express Highway.

Following the announcement, members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in Navi Mumbai celebrated by distributing sweets to motorists at the Vashi toll plaza. The celebrations highlighted the party's long standing demand for transparency in toll collection and the removal of tolls once road projects were funded through toll revenue.

Expressing his joy over the decision, MNS founding chairperson Raj Thackeray took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate the citizens in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and MNS supporters. He stated, "Congratulations to all the citizens living within the MMR area and a big congratulations to my Maharashtra Sainiks. They fought hard for the demands that there be transparency in toll transactions, and that if the road works are paid for through the money collected, they should be toll-free."

Thackeray further stated the criticism the party faced for its aggressive stance on toll booths, noting that drastic actions were sometimes necessary to bring attention to serious issues. "Anyway, at least Mumbaikars got toll free and our struggle bore fruit. It is a matter of happiness that our agitation was quite successful. But they should assure the people that this is not a decision taken just for the election" he added.
