Maharashtra has taken a pioneering step in modernizing crime investigation by introducing mobile forensic vans, becoming the first state in India to implement this advanced facility. The initiative, aimed at improving the accuracy and efficiency of forensic evidence collection, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at an event held at Sahyadri Guest House.

The mobile forensic vans are part of the Indian Citizens Security Code, 2023, which mandates the use of forensic evidence in cases punishable by seven years or more of imprisonment. Chief Minister Fadnavis revealed that a total of 259 mobile forensic vans will be rolled out across the state, with 21 vans already operational.

“These vans will bring forensic expertise directly to the crime scene using advanced technology, including block-chain for evidence security,” said Chief Minister Fadnavis. The vans will be equipped with the Crime Scene Application, allowing real-time documentation of investigations, collection of evidence, and secure barcode tracking.

When a crime is reported, a control room notification will alert the forensic team, which will visit the crime scene and collect evidence under expert supervision. The team will use video conferencing if needed and submit a detailed crime scene report to the investigating officer.

This new system is expected to improve the reliability and precision of evidence collection, reducing the chances of evidence tampering. By ensuring more effective documentation and handling, the initiative aims to significantly increase conviction rates and deter criminal activity. Chief Minister Fadnavis emphasized that the integration of forensic kits, experts, and technology will strengthen criminal cases and support justice.

The launch event was attended by several dignitaries, including Minister of State for Home Affairs (Rural) Dr. Pankaj Bhoyar, Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, Director General of Police Rashmi Shukla, and other senior officials.

Key Features of the Mobile Forensic Vans:

• Evidence Collection: The vans are capable of collecting crucial evidence, such as DNA and blood samples, especially in sensitive cases like rape.
• Cybercrime & Explosives Kits: Special kits for cybercrime investigations and testing of explosive materials will also be available.
• Onboard Experts: Forensic experts and support staff will be stationed in each van to ensure proper handling and preservation of evidence.
• Real-Time Updates: CCTV cameras and connected systems will enable real-time reporting to police stations.
• Secure Evidence Handling: Evidence will be documented with photographs and videos, sealed, and sent for analysis to prevent tampering.
