In a powerful display of unity, environmental activists and concerned citizens gathered on Sunday morning at Sector 4, Belapur to form a silent human chain under the banner of Save Belapur Hills. The movement aimed to raise awareness about the increasing illegal constructions in the hilly areas of Belapur, which are leading to the destruction of vital forest resources and the degradation of the environment.
Participants in the protest emphasized the urgent need for action, calling on Navi Mumbai's guardian agencies, including CIDCO, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, and the Forest Department, to heed the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission's directive issued in August 2024. This directive mandates the removal of illegal encroachments on Belapur Hill, a crucial area for biodiversity and ecological balance.
The recent protest follows a similar human chain campaign held in April 2024, which aimed to curb illegal encroachments and protect the natural landscape. In response to the growing public outcry, the State Human Rights Commission took notice and filed a Suo Moto petition, making CIDCO, NMMC, the forest department, and the Thane District Collector respondents. The Commission's verdict ordered the demolition of illegal constructions on Belapur Hill.
However, activists have expressed frustration with CIDCO's lack of genuine action. While the agency has claimed to comply with the Commission's orders by demolishing a few religious structures, it subsequently halted further action, citing soil erosion due to the monsoon. Critics argue that this is merely a façade, suggesting that CIDCO is evading its responsibilities under political pressure.
Sudhir Dani of the Sajjag Nagarik Manch, who played a key role in organizing the movement, stated, "The overall administrative behaviour of CIDCO indicates a lack of sincerity in implementing the State Human Rights Commission's orders. This movement is a call to action for government agencies to recognize the ongoing destruction of our natural resources and to take decisive steps to protect them”.
The silent human chain saw participation from various social organizations and environmental activists, all united in their mission to protect Belapur Hill from further encroachment and degradation. The movement serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to safeguard the environment for future generations.
As the campaign gains momentum, local citizens hope that their voices will resonate with decision-makers, leading to meaningful action to preserve the integrity of Belapur Hills.
