Ahead of World Environment Day, a significant clean-up drive took place at DPS Flamingo Lake and its surroundings in Nerul, orchestrated by city-based environmental enthusiasts, school and college students, and Navi Mumbai residents on Saturday, June 1st. World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5th each year, underscores the importance of environmental preservation and conservation for a healthier planet.

Titled 'Dharti Ki Awaz,' this clean-up drive saw an impressive turnout of over 300 individuals of various age groups. Supported by authorities such as NMMC, the Forest Department, NRI Coastal Police, Mangrove Cell, and communities like NMEPS and Environment Life Foundation RCNM Sunrise, the endeavour was a resounding success, culminating in the collection of 450 kilograms of waste. This concerted effort marks a significant stride towards a cleaner, more conscientious future.

Participants gathered at 7:15 am at the jetty near Gate 5 of DPS School and, within three hours, diligently cleaned the lake's periphery in all four directions. Enthusiastic school children also collected around thirty small discarded idols for a revamping activity. The event concluded with participants taking a pledge, committing to fostering a cleaner atmosphere.

At the forefront of this event was the dynamic and innovative team of the DY Patil Climate Action Lab (D-CAL), founded by Ms. Rajlakshmi Patil. Dedicated to combating climate change through student engagement and community-inclusive actions, D-CAL's efforts were bolstered by the newly established Rotary Club of Navi Mumbai - Joy of Giving. Led by President Mr. Mahesh Gera, this passionate team comprises individuals from diverse fields, all dedicated to making a meaningful impact on society.

“This mega initiative was more than just a clean-up drive. It aimed to cascade into a broader clean-up of our minds, consciousness, and behaviours regarding environmental preservation. By working together, the participants hope to make a difference and embark on a new beginning for a healthier planet,” shared Mahesh Gera.
