In a move aimed at promoting environmental conservation while enhancing living conditions, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has launched the 'Community-Centric Green Reconstruction and Sustainable Housing Initiative'. The project, which is currently being implemented as a pilot initiative in Shivshakti Nagar and Nav Yuvan Complex in Mira Road, is already showing positive results by reducing electricity bills and providing natural cooling to homes.

The project, which was reviewed by Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Sanjay Katkar on Saturday, focuses on creating energy-efficient housing that reduces the carbon footprint of its residents. By utilizing sustainable and eco-friendly technologies, the MBMC aims to strike a balance between development and environmental preservation.

The initiative began with heat mapping, which identified areas with extreme heat conditions. As a result, the first phase of the project has targeted homes in the Shivshakti Nagar and Nav Yuvan Complex areas. In these complexes, the following changes have been implemented: Ventilation bands have been installed in front of houses to enhance natural airflow and cooling. Aluminum foil has been placed under the roofs to reduce heat absorption. SRI (Solar Reflective Index) paint has been applied to roofs, reflecting sunlight and maintaining cooler interiors. Energy-efficient fans have replaced older fans to reduce power consumption. Motion sensor lights have been installed in public spaces to conserve energy. Solar panels have been set up to harness renewable energy. Community farming has been initiated in the Nav Yuvan Complex, where senior citizens are actively involved in growing vegetables. Residents are now cultivating five to six types of vegetables, promoting local food production and sustainable living.

Additionally, a waste sorting and composting system has been introduced to reduce landfill waste and encourage recycling.

Residents of both complexes have already noticed a significant reduction in their electricity bills due to the energy-saving measures. The natural cooling methods have made homes more comfortable during the hot weather, while the solar energy panels and energy-efficient fixtures have contributed to lower energy consumption.

While interacting with the residents, expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the pilot project. He emphasized the intention to expand these efforts throughout the city to benefit all residents. “This is a crucial step toward creating a sustainable, eco-friendly living environment for the citizens of Mira Bhayandar,” he said, outlining plans for further implementation across the city in the near future.
