The Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro-5 corridor will now be extended to Ulhasnagar instead of terminating at Kalyan. The extension will run from Khadakpada to Ulhasnagar, covering 7.7 km, with work set to begin as part of the 2024-25 budget. The necessary financial provisions have been made, and the expansion process will commence soon.
Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, MMRDA Commissioner stated that the budget includes significant provisions for metro projects and other infrastructure, outlining a vision for the future development of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro-5 line spans 24.9 km and has an estimated cost of Rs 8,500 crore. It includes 17 metro stations, with services starting from Thane. Initially, the metro was planned to run only up to Kalyan, but now the extension will take it directly to Ulhasnagar.
Work on the first phase, focusing on the Thane-Bhiwandi section, will begin soon. The budget has allocated Rs 1,579.99 crore for Metro Line 5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan). With this expansion, areas like Ulhasnagar, Virar, and Badlapur will be integrated into the metro network.
